Discovering West Nepal- The Wild Frontier : Main Points

§  The travelogue “Discovering west Nepal- The Wild Frontier”  is written by Philippine freelance writer, Megan leung   who here talks about her five-week adventurous walk in the western Himalayas of  Nepal.

§  The author visited the most amazing adventure tourism destinations of the world like observation of culture and beauty of nature.  She saw a colourful rooster in the western Himalayas and she was really delighted with its catchy scenery.

§  She describes the houses on the trails of Western Nepal as the stones houses  formed under a rock over a river with cozy facilities and many more  in them. She says "I walked towards a village 15 kilometres further as the crow flies”,  by this, she means the distance that she had to cover  to reach the largest mountains of the planet.

§  When she reached  the village Thankur , she found  it had only two houses. She saw three large, shiny and rainbow-coloured birds called lophophorouses there. The evening she found there was blinding and brilliant.

§  She  had to walk more than 8 hours a day without water and food.  When she reached Jumla she was ill with an unknown virus and a bad tummy. But she was relieved after she had medicine given by an American and pani puri at local eatery.

§  The author found the bucket water in Khali Lagna was frozen. As she cracked it, she felt satisfied but she was astonished  as she saw lukewarm underneath water.

§  She found the Rara Lake alive and the water in the  lake was glistening in its dark blue glory on the day she reached there. She found white peaks saying “Hello!”  from a distance.

§  Through this five week long walk, she covered a distance of about 25 percent of the Nepal Himalaya. She was delighted to witness and experience such primal instincts, human intuition and oneness with nature.

Critical thinking

a.     It is said that travelling a place equals to reading three books. Do you agree? Why?

I strongly support the statement that travelling a place equals to reading three books and much more than anything else because of following reasons:

1.     Books only provide its readers a general view about the subject matter and one has to accept whatever the writer understands and writes, as a result, it may provide one side judgment which cannot taken granted. Thus, the real or lively aspect may be missed.

2.     Generally, books were written by a small limited number of people who reflect their own ideas and understandings about the book’s subject.  So, if someone tends to learn some reliable information, I totally believe that he must observe or travel the place and asks a lot of related folks about the real life situation

3.     Texts  sometimes  provide us with controversial and vague information about something that we wanted to learn. Therefore, the readers may be misguided by radical writer’s covering ideas.

§  To cut the matter short, both books and traveling have their own significances and deficiencies. However, I think that traveling is primary and more accurate  way to achieve exact, real, lively and specific information  in comparison to books.

b. The author spent five-week long walk along the western Himalayas. Do you think it was adventurous? Why?

The author spent five-week long walk along the western Himalayas. I think it was really adventurous because of following reasons:

Ø  She visited the most amazing adventure tourism destinations of the world.

Ø Trek to Western part of Nepal itself provides an adventurous and exciting experience to the author along with its observation of culture and beauty of nature.

Ø She had to walk more than 8-10 hours on such stony and sloppy sites which was really a bold task.

Ø She did not have fresh water and food to drink.

Ø She once became sick due to viral attack.

Ø She drank almost frozen water full of lukewarm underneath.

Ø She had to walk without even food and water for the whole day and many more.

A.    Write a travelogue of your recent visit to a natural/religious place in about 300 words. Use the following clues.

(Local costumes and traditions .... Cuisine …Depiction of places of interest, local history and culture .... Your adventures ..... Prices and transportation … Entertainment )

Last year, I went to a walk with my three other friends for World Peace Stupa which is located on the top of the hill in Pokhara. We started our journey from Pokhara Bus Park Hotel at early in the morning after having our back pack. I kept a camera, a match box, some medicines, an umbrella and some eating materials. We had worn local dress. We took a taxi hiring it in Rs. 350  upto Davis fall. We visited Davis Fall and then started our journey on foot for the World Peace Stupa.  It was four hours walk from my hope. The weather was fine in the morning. The cold wind was blowing. We began to start at sharp 8 o’clock in the morning. We had to reach on the top of the hill and returned form there in the evening.

We began walking with our backpack. I took many photographs. The rhododendrons were blooming. I also heard the beautiful songs sung by the cuckoos. We took rest under a papal tree and ate our snacks. We reached on the top and looked at the valley. We felt complete joy. I took the photos of Gautam Buddha and I visualized the whole Pokara city from there. The cold wind was blowing and I felt very cold there. We returned from there at 2 pm and reached our hotel  room at 7 pm. We had dinner and then say good night to each other and went to sleep. I still remember such joyful feelings of my memory.
