1. Read the text and do the tasks.                                                             15
Mt Everest grows by nearly a metre to new height
The world’s highest mountain Mount Everest is 0.86m higher than had been previously officially calculated, Nepal and China have jointly announced. Until now the countries differed over whether to add the snow cap on top. The new height is 8,848.86m (29,032 ft). China’s previous official measurement of 8,844.43m had put the mountain nearly four metres lower than Nepal’s. Everest Officials at Nepal’s foreign ministry and department of survey said surveyors from both countries had co-ordinated to agree on the new height. The agreement to jointly announce the new measurement of the Earth’s highest point was made during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu last year. Chinese authorities had said previously Mount Everest should be measured to its rock height, while Nepalese authorities argued the snow on top of the summit should be included.

The Chinese surveyors had calculated their figure after they measured the mountain in 2005. Nepal’s government officials told the BBC in 2012 that they were under pressure from China to accept the Chinese height and therefore they had decided to go for a fresh measurement to “set the record straight once and for all”. The 8,848m height, Nepal had been using for Mount Everest was determined by the Survey of India in 1954, but for the first time the country has now conducted its own measurement of the summit. Four Nepalese land surveyors spent two years training for the mission, before heading to the summit. “Before this, we had never done the measurement ourselves,” Damodar Dhakal, spokesman at Nepal’s department of survey, told the BBC. “Now that we have a young, technical team [who could also go to the Everest summit], we could do it on our own,” Mr. Dhakal said. Nepal’s lead surveyor Khimlal Gautam lost his toe due to frostbite while on the summit to install height-measuring equipment last year. “For summiteers, scaling the highest peak means a great accomplishment.

For us, it was just the beginning,” Mr. Gautam had told BBC Nepali after his return. “Unlike other surveys of the Everest in the past, we chose 03:00 to minimise errors that could have been caused because of sunlight in the day time.” Some geologists have suggested a major earthquake in 2015 may have had an impact on Mount Everest’s height. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal, and caused an avalanche which buried parts of the base camp at the mountain. At least 18 20 climbers were killed. Some geologists said the earthquake may have caused Everest’s snow cap to shrink. Scientists had found that some other Himalayan peaks such as Langtang Himal, mostly to the north of Kathmandu and close to the epicentre, had reduced in height by approximately a metre after the earthquake. Others have argued that Mount Everest, like other Himalayan peaks, may have actually grown over time because of the shifting tectonic plates it sits on. But experts say major earthquakes can result in that process being reversed. “The 2015 earthquake is also a major reason why we re-measured the mountain,” said Mr. Dhakal.

Model Question Set-2

Compulsory English (ENG. 003)                Grade: 11                       Full Marks: 75

1. Read the text and do the tasks.                                                                          15

Alfred Nobel

A pacifist at heart and an inventor by nature, Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel invented dynamite. He was sure his creation would help bring about the end of war. “When two armies of equal strength can annihilate each other in an instant”, he once wrote, “then all civilised nations will retreat and disband their troops”. Things didn’t quite go according to plan. ,
The invention that he thought would end all wars was seen by many others as an extremely deadly product. In 1888, when Alfred’s brother Ludvig died, a French newspaper mistakenly ran an obituary for Alfred which called him the “merchant of death”. Not wanting to go down in history with such a horrible epitaph, Nobel created a will that soon shocked his relatives and established the now famous Nobel prizes.
According to his will, Alfred Nobel’s enormous fortune was to be used to establish prizes to award those who had done their best to benefit mankind in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Nobel initially donated 35 million Swedish Kronor (about $225 million today); the prizes come from the fortune’s annual interest.
The Nobel Laureates are announced at the beginning of October each year. A couple of months later, on 10th December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, they receive their prize from the Swedish King – a Nobel Diploma, a medal and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize. All Nobel prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, except for the Nobel Peace Prize which is awarded in Oslo, Norway.
Each award is decided by separate institutions which form assemblies to select the actual prize recipients. Some prizes (medicine) require Nobel assembly members to remain active in their fields, while others (literature) appoint members for life. The Peace prize is actually decided by five members of the Norwegian Parliament. Nobel Prize winners must be living; there are no posthumous awards. Each year, the Nobel committees distribute nomination forms to an undisclosed number of recipients – past winners, prominent institutions, respected members of the field – who are allowed to choose as many nominees as they want. Self-nomination is not permitted. The winner is decided by a simple majority vote.

Model Question Set-3

Compulsory English (ENG. 003)                Grade: 11                        Full Marks: 75 Time: 3hours

1. Read the text and do the tasks.                                                                                15

                                      Environmental Pollutions
Environmental pollution refers to the introduction of harmful pollutants into the environment. The major types of environmental pollution are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution. thermal pollution, soil pollution and light pollution.
Deforestation and hazardous gaseous emission also lead to environmental pollution. During the last 10 years, the world has witnessed severe rise in environmental pollution. We all live on planet earth, which is the only planet known to have an environment, where air and water are two basic things that sustain life.
Without air and water the earth would be like the other planets — no man, no animals. no plants. The biosphere in which living beings have their sustenance has oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and water vapor. All these are well balanced to ensure and help a healthy growth of life in the animal world. This balance does not only help the life-cycles of animals and plants but it also creates the perennial sources of minerals and energies without which the human civilization of to-day could not be built.
The sources and causes of environmental pollution include the following: Industrial activities: The industries all over the world that brought prosperity and affluence, made inroads in the biosphere and disturbed the ecological balances. The pall of smoke, the swirling gases, industrial effluents and the fall-out of scientific experiments became constant health hazards, polluting and contaminating both air and water. The improper disposal of industrial wastes are the sources of soil and water pollution.
The smoke emitted by vehicles using petrol and diesel and the cooking coal also pollutes the environment. The multiplication of vehicles. emitting black smoke that, being free and unfettered, spreads out and mixes with the air eve breathe. The harmful smoke of these vehicles causes air pollution. Further, the sounds produced by these vehicles produces causes noise pollution. Rapid urbanization and industrialization: The urbanization and the rapid growth of industrialization are causing through environmental pollution the greatest harm to the plant life, which in turn causing harm to the animal kingdom and the human lives. Population overgrowth: Due to the increase in population, particularly in developing countries, there has been surge in demand for basic food, occupation and shelter. The world has witnessed massive deforestation to expand absorb the growing population and their demands.
There surely cannot be any radical solution, for the existing factories  cannot be bodily lifted to a place far from the populated zone. However. the following attempts can be made to solve the problem of environmental pollution. The Government can at least see that future factories are set up at a distant place, an industrial complex far away from the township. Researchers may find out how to avoid harmful smoke from running vehicles. Deforestation should be stopped and forestry should be devolved. Discharge of factory wastes in rivers should be banned so as to make the river-water free from pollution. We can very well notice the abnormal behaviour of the seasons - the cycle developing clogs in its wheels; and the worried experts fear that the disturbed balance in the biosphere has assumed such serious proportion that very soon our world would be uninhabitable like Hiroshima of 1945. But it is heartening to find the entire world is aware of the menace. Some of the advanced countries have already taken some measures to meet it. If we fail to restore the ecological balance right now, it would be too late tomorrow.

Nepali movie ‘Jhola’ is a movie made on a popular book by the same name by literary figure, Krishna Dharabasi. The plot set on the Nepali society of the time about a century ago. The movie directed by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai features Garima Pant, Desh Bhakta Khanal, Deepak Chhetri, Laxmi Giri, Pralhad Khatiwada in main roles. The movie made on the banner of Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd. was made after an extensive research on the topic for about 7 years. Based on the novel, Late Deepak Alok had written the script of the movie – keeping the core of the book intact. The movie can be categorized as a historical art movie.
STORY
The movie presents the height of violence against women in ancient Nepal – Sati tradition. In ‘Jhola’ an young woman (Garima Pant) is married to a man 40 years senior to her. When her husband dies, Garima is kept to be burned alive with the dead body of her husband. She escaped the fire and hides in a cave. You can watch the movie to know what happens to Garima and how her small son helps her.
STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS
Although there are places for improvement, the scenes in the movie seem realistic and historical. The movie depicts the environment of East Nepal at the time of 100 years ago. The movie uses long shot to present realistic views of the time. The movie features traditional tools like dhiki, janto, madani, ranko, diyalo and so on.
The young people could get a glimpse of our past and the old people can feel the time they have went through in their childhood. So, both young and the old can enjoy the movie. In addition to Sati tradition, the movie also touches slavery (Kamara Kamari) tradition.
The cinematography is one of the best aspect of the movie. The director has also taken care to present the ancient environment. Most of the lighting during the shooting were also made by traditional lights like ranko, diyalo and fire place light. The dress used by the characters were also sewn by hand.  Background music was also composed of leaf music and traditional tunes. The director says that none of the artists have done make up. To make the characters natural, they had carried cow dung, dug in fields, carried water and the natural dirt was used to make the characters real.
STAR CAST
Garima Pant and the child artist have done a very realistic acting. Other actors have also justified their character. In a report, Garima got sick after the shooting of the scene in which she runs away by swimming in the river. Garima told that throughout the shooting she didn’t take a bath or applied makeup.
The director Yadav Bhattarai is a well known name in directing Nepali music videos. After directing about 900 music videos Yadav decided to make the movie on the story he read some 11 years ago. He read the book in BS 2059 and got the permission to make movie on it in BS 2063 from Dharabasi. The script writer Deepak Alok had died four years prior to the release of the movie.
CONCLUSION
‘Jhola’ is a historical movie to get a glimpse of the time of our fore fathers. The movie is a mirror of violence against women in ancient time. Apart from the entertainment, the movie offers insights into history, culture and tradition. ‘Jhola’ has it’s share of shortcomings but, it is a good historical movie. If you like fight, singing and dance, and fun in movies – this might not be the one you would love to watch.

Subject: Complaint regarding the quality of the headphones

Dear Sir,
I am writing this mail to inform you that I purchased a headphone at Suman Electronics on Monday, 22nd April,2021.
While buying the product, the staffs assured me that it was an advanced and new headphone with many qualities. They said that they offer headphone with powerful deep bass (like Monster Beats) and visceral dynamic range and there is no better sound quality in others than that. Furthermore, they added that their users told them they listen to music or watch movies with our headphones while at the office, at home, walking on the street, or while traveling in airplanes. Therefore, I may test the headphones for 30 days without risk if any problem arise it can be replaced easily. So, take advantage of our fantastic product from now paying its cost $99. I had heard the most reputable name and fame of your Electronics in the city for its original gadgets.
Later,  I arrived home I discovered that the headphone wasn’t working. With in 2 hours, I returned to your electronic shop again to replace it. Unfortunately, the staffs refused to replace the headphones or return my money although I provided the receipt. They behave badly to me. I’m deeply disappointed about the quality of the product and the disrespectful treatment I received in your store.
I trust this is not the way that a reputed electronic store wishes to conduct business with valued customers—I have been with you and buying the products from store since the store was founded and have never encountered such treatment before. I would request you to discuss matters further and to learn from this how to prevent a similar situation from recurring.
I expect a letter of explanation as well as refund of my money by resolving this. Otherwise, I will have to take a step further for decisive actions.

Sincerely,
Sanjana Dhital
