Grade-11 (English) Unit-3 Media and Society, Social Media: Its Influence and Control Over People's Lives- by Aulia Maharani Karli (Part-I)

Aulia Maharani Karli . “How Strongly Can Social Media Influence and Control People’s Lives?” -Voices of  Youth. Web. 2014.

Karli explains about how social media influences and controls people’s lives causing them to get distracted in society.

It can be a good thing to be connected and communicate with friends or others, but the negative impact of social media indicates it cannot be used too often.

The author expresses her view of social media as a threat to society and to people as it makes people get involved too much with phones, internet, social media, etc.

The article warns people not to have dependency on social media to be free from potential damages and its bad effects.  The article is fairly recent with a statistical analysis resource which interprets the findings. Therefore, the source is extremely credible.

Social Media: Its Influence and Control Over People’s Lives

Ø The author defines ‘Social Media’ as a media that makes people able to meet and communicate with people around the world.

Ø Social Media is a big part of our life. Whenever someone wakes up or has time s/he greets his/her friend on Facebook; listen or watch music videos on YouTube;  walk out to get the newspaper; scroll the Twitter timeline to get information; share about articles, pictures, videos and so on.

Ø Social media not only allows the users to share about professions, major of study, works and company,  addresses, political views and religion, but also allows them to find a job and to find the employees required. In fact, everything looks and feels easier to do with social media.

Ø The author poses a question- “If everything looks and feels easier to do with social media, isn’t something strange? Isn’t society extremely dependent on social media? How strongly can social media influence and control people’s lives?

Ø - This question takes the author back to a very interesting case in Indonesia that took place about some years ago.

Ø In August 2008, an Indonesian woman named Prita Mulyasari sent an email to her friends about disappointment services of a Hospital in Jakarta by its doctors, nurses and administration staffs reminding them to be selective in choosing the hospital. But her message became a big problem as her friend shared it to a website (the People’s Forum) which many people read and commented about the issue.

Ø In September 2008, the management of the hospital reported Prita Mulyasari for the bad news she has spread about the hospital claiming for material loss of about Rp. 161 million as a replacement for clarification in national newspapers and Rp. 100 million for immaterial losses. Furthermore, she was detained(hirasat ma rakhnu) in May 2009.

Ø After 8 months, she went through various inspection and verification process and was convicted by the court for violating the law about using the ICT (Information and Communication Technology).

Ø This case got rapidly spread among Indonesian people who didn’t justify what Prita had done against the hospital rather tried to help her at least to pay the amercement  by making her first Facebook account (https://www.facebook.com/KoinPeduliPrita) with slogan “Help Free Prita.”

Ø Many volunteers,  social workers, activists, students and even artists and singers with charity concert  came together to help her with Rp. 825 million which was extremely worth for Prita to bring her two kids up, too although she still had to go through the period of detainees.

Ø Through this, the author concludes that she is not spreading bad news about her country or any institution or people rather she tries to make people believe that social media has the strength to influence and control people’s lives directing life to get worse or better. It doesn’t mean that we need to stay away or become anti-social media.

Ø The message she forwards is that people are stronger than social media so that they should think before they act and speak in Social Media.

      B.  What is cyber bullying? What are its effects? How can it be stopped?
  Cyber bullying:
Ø Cyberbullying is bullying with the use of digital technologies. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms and mobile phones. It is repeated behaviour, aimed at scaring, angering or shaming those who are targeted.
Ø  It’s effects:
When bullying happens online it can feel as if you’re being attacked everywhere, even inside your own home. It can seem like there’s no escape. The effects can last a long time and affect a person in many ways:
Mentally — feeling upset, embarrassed, stupid, even angry
Emotionally — feeling ashamed or losing interest in the things you love
Physically — tired (loss of sleep), or experiencing symptoms like stomach aches and headaches.
  Tips to help Cyber Bullying:
Ø Learn about the privacy settings of your favourite social media apps. Here are some actions you can take on many of them:
Ø You can decide who can see your profile, send you direct messages or comment on your posts by adjusting your account privacy settings.
Ø You can report hurtful comments, messages and photos and request they be removed.
Ø Besides ‘unfriending’, you can completely block people to stop them from seeing your profile or contacting you.
Ø You can also choose to have comments by certain people to appear only to them without completely blocking them.
Ø You can delete posts on your profile or hide them from specific people.
Ø On most of your favourite social media, people aren't notified when you block, restrict or report them.
Ø Don’t do it if you don’t feel totally comfortable doing it,
Ø You deserve backup. See if there’s someone who can listen, help you process what’s going on and work through it – a friend, relative or maybe an adult you trust and ask for help.
Ø Protect your accounts. Don’t share your passwords with anyone – even your closest friends, who may not be close forever – and password-protect your phone so no one can use it to impersonate you.
Ø If someone you know is being bullied, take action and parents should work for their children.
